District Common Assessment Essay “Ashes” Ashleigh was pressured into making a decision between taking her mom's safe keeping money for her dad or not. In the story “Ashes” by Susan Beth Pfeffer the main character Ashleigh’s parents are divorced. Her dad is very positive and humble but, her mom is very practical. Her dad made a deal for 200 dollars to make his life better. He doesn’t have the money so, he asks Ashleigh if her mom still hid the safe keeping money in the teapot. Ashleigh told her dad that the money was in the teapot and he asked her to get it for him. She now has to make a decision. At the end of the story Ashleigh decides to give the money to her dad because he makes her happy, he made Ashleigh feel bad for him, and he tricked her into doing it. First reason, Ashleighs dad makes her happy. He is always so positive and nice whenever he gets to see Ashleigh. Her dad would say that all that he could give Ashleigh was dreams and that made Ashleigh feel good inside because it gave her hope. Ashleigh’s dad also made her trust him because he acted humble. Ashleigh trusts that once she gives her dad the money, he will pay her back in time. In the story Ashleigh’s dad says that he will pay her back by friday so her mom will never notice. Ashleigh also feels bad for her dad and gives him the money because she knows her mom will never notice. The author of the story proves this by Ashleigh’s dad saying, “ Unless there’s an earthquake or the Martians invade. I think we can gamble neither of those things will happen before Friday.”(page 4). Lastly, Ashleigh thinks the situation will end ok. Her dad stated in the story, “I wouldn’t jeopardize our time together, honey. You let me have the money tonight. I’ll straighten out my little difficulty, and Thursday night, when your mom is out, I’ll give you back what I owe you.” (page 4).
