If someone looked up the Ashley Lieberg born on September 25, 1992, they would not find her. Actually, no one would find any record of her before 2011. The reason for this is simple. Ashley Lieberg is Jordan Lieberg. In 2011, my male cousin Jordan came to the realization that he was a girl in a boy’s body. Through a sex change Jordan became Ashley Lieberg. Now I have a female cousin named Ashley Lieberg. I will never forget the twenty-four hours after I found out. It was Christmas Eve 2012. I was in the basement living room with my three brothers: Jason, Josh, and Justin. The air was cool and dry, but the fireplace emanated a warm, comforting feeling. When we finished, we crammed into our van. My Dad drove the six of us to his parents’ house. At my grandparents’ house, I mingled with my cousins, aunts, uncles, and my grandparents. Around half an hour after I had arrived, Ashley walked in the door. I went silent. I expected to see a huge difference in her appearance. Instead, the only physical differences were that she was wearing make-up and tight black dress. I watching intently as she made her way through the ranks of family members while giving everyone hugs. When she got to me, I was almost scared. I didn’t know why I was scared, but I gave her a hug and she went on to the next family member. I could tell by the look in her eyes that she was terrified. The way she went around, acting like nothing was different, amazed me. I realized I have nothing to be scared of because she is more scared of me. As the day went on, I asked Ashley a few questions. She answered them politely and gave me a better idea of why she got a sex change. One of the questions I asked was, “Why did you choose the name Ashley?” Ashley explained, ”I guess I felt drawn to this name. It was the name Ash used in the first season of Pokemon when he dressed as a girl to get into the Celadon City gym to see Erika, who happens to be one of my favorite Gym Leaders.” When I heard the explanation, I wasn’t surprised because Ashley had always loved Pokemon and anime.
