According to Dalton Conley Ethnocentrism is the belief that one’s own culture or group is superior to others, and the tendency to view all other cultures from the perspective of one’s own (Conley, 2013 77.) By discussing the difference between ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, and along with the position that I favor most. Cultural relativism is taking into account the differences across cultures without passing judgement or assigning value. (Conley, 2013 82.)
Ethnocentrism is still being used today,and we are surrounded by a different variety of cultures; I personally see it in my daily life. For example, if a Hispanic man was dressed in his work uniform and were to walk into a fancy clothing store located in Beverly Hills, no one will take him seriously or acknowledge him. On the other hand, if a White women were to go to the same fancy clothing store the attendants will be assisting her with a finer quality of assistants than the Hispanic man. That gentleman could've of been criticized right away due to the way he was dress or because of his culture. The attendants in the clothing store might of all been the same ethnicity as like the White women, the same “culture.” They’ll most likely criticize the Hispanic man and predicted that he cannot afford anything in …show more content…
