In order to communicate effectively, respect must be established. Carrying two distinctive connotations, respect signifies deep admiration as a result of abilities, qualities or achievements. It too, shows consideration for one’s moralities (Giesinger, 2012). In response to education, the principle of respect promotes the foundation of a culturally inclusive environment. Thus, the logo exemplified above illustrates the importance of respect within the professional teacher identity. Based on the Queensland Code of Ethics, educators demonstrate respect by acknowledging that trust, value and confidentiality form the basis of relationships with students and their families (Queensland College of Teachers, 2008). In this logo, the handprint incorporating the Aboriginal flag symbolises cultural identity in education. The original flag has been manipulated to replicate the journey each Indigenous student brings to the classroom. As students present with different capacities, this handprint acknowledges the impact of identity and portrays the importance of affirming the place of individuals; especially those whose needs have been historically marginalised. To represent all students, the tree is in black hue. By removing colour, this symbolises that respectful education is inclusive of all diverse ethnicities. Similarly, the smaller stick figures have been deliberately incorporated to emphasise diversity in schools. Language allows for the transmission of cultural heritage and knowledge between Indigenous generations (Harrison & Sellwood, 2016). If a student’s language is not respected, then their wellbeing, self-esteem and identity can be disturbed. This ultimately leads to exclusion in education (Harrison & Sellwood, 2016). Within the classroom, communication strategies such as omitting jargon, using visual aids and having the student explain their meaning could be implemented to show respect and inclusivity towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
