Most importantly, my passion and commitment to the tamariki in my class and our wider school community makes me an ideal candidate for this role. I believe Education creates opportunities. Opportunities for tamariki to explore and develop who they want to be in the wider world. Opportunities to discover new knowledge and understandings which will determine how they navigate the direction of their lives, both academically and as individuals.

My personal teaching pedagogy can be defined by three key aspects all of which encourage student success through high-expectations and knowing my tamariki. Firstly, classroom climate. I endeavor to ensure that my classroom is inviting and supportive. This helps to promote peer and group learning. Students trust me as well as each other, they are able to listen and share ideas confidently. I make a conscious effort to ensure we have ample time for talking. Students agency allows students to take greater control over their learning. It disrupts the more traditional, top-heavy teacher-lead dynamic. Students need to feel their voice is valued, this is reflected by what and how I select my topics and resources. Developing student agency encourages students to see value in their culture and heritage and the knowledge they bring into the classroom; creating empowered learners to know who they are and where they are from.
Finally, creating authentic learning experiences. Learning is not fun for all students. Students who struggle to be engaged with the learning process, will mostly likely struggle to be successful at it too. I endeavor to create a ‘hook’ or series of ‘hooks’ that ensure students see the value in the specific learning e.g. watch a clip, read a story, play a game etc. Creating a rich learning experience is also about ensuring it is relevant.
