First used in war on August 6, 1945 the atomic bomb was dropped on to Hiroshima killing thousands. On that fateful day a door was opened out of which came a monster the world had no idea how to deal with. The ability to destroy a massive amount of the population so effortlessly has created a world-wide issue that continues to this day. Tension runs rampant in international relations, many times due to the power behind atomic bombs and the advancements thereafter. Many feared the war would prolong and millions more lives would end in the battles to come. Some believe that the use of the atomic bomb silenced the monster of war and kept it from devouring millions of souls. Anger was still pulsing through the veins of Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and soldiers feared for their own lives. Many times drafted into the military without much choice, soldiers had to follow strict commanders into battle. It is not difficult to see how this may be frightening to a young man. In order to end an agonizing war, the Americans felt it necessary to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, as “conventional weapons” were not as effective as needed. Once and for all the Americans hoped to pull the rug under the Japanese and stop them from standing up once more to fight a terrible war. The attack on Pearl Harbor lead to escalating tensions between America and Japan. Finally, the atomic bomb was used to save more lives than it took. Although there is no way to know how many more soldiers would have died if the atomic bombs were not dropped, there most likely would have been millions more lying dead at the end of war.
