We, the United States, entered this war on December 7, 1941, 4 years ago. Since then, we have been through a lot together as a country. The United States army defended our values of freedom and liberty in the Pacific, halting the progress of the Japanese at Iwo Jima. Our brave soldiers defended our values of democracy and equality at Stalingrad, ending the Nazi rampage in Europe. Our war strategy as part of the Allied forces so far was to target the Communist forces in Europe. This part of the plan was completed. The German forces officially surrendered on May 7, 1945, and it brought to a close our fighting in Europe. However, after this was completed, we had to face the problem of Japan. These scientists are one of the primary reasons for our victory. The atomic bomb uses power that has never before been available to mankind. Even though it unleashed terrible destruction in Japan, I consider it an invaluable weapon in our battle for world peace. As all of the American people know, we as a nation have strived to do the best we can to fight this war. We have turned our economy into a war production fueled economy. The public had to teach our children to conserve resources and to ration everything from our food to our clothes to gasoline.
