To kill a mockingbird in a novel written by Harper Lee This novel is mostly covering the American racist society in the late 1950-60s. Atticus Finch is a major character in the novel, he was the father of Jem and Scout. Atticus is a very calm person, he doesn't get nervous in stressful situations “jem picked up the candy box and threw it in the fire. He picked up the camellia, and when I went off to bed I saw him fingering the wide petals. Atticus was reading the paper”p.149 .He is not affected by what other people say or think. Atticus believes in justice and that every person should be treated the same of another person, no matter what colour he or she is. For this reason, he chooses to defend Tom Robinson, who is an African-American that was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was convinced that Tom was innocent and so he wanted to do his best to give Tom the best defense and prove that he is innocent. Atticu knew that he might lose the case, but he didn’t stop. He was too determined to represent Tom as an innocent man and prove that not every black person is bad. People in the neighborhood hated what Atticus did, they were insulting him by calling him a nigger lover in front of his kids “ he’s nothin’ but a nigger-lover”p.110. His kids were having a hard time facing all these comments on what their dad was doing as white man defending a black man. Furthermore, Atticus was a very intelligent and wise person, he used to read all the time. Likewise, Atticus was very polite with his maid Calpurnia. He used to treat her as a member of his family.
