My favorite sentence from this reading had to be, "The arms were in sad shape, because everybody was always sitting on them, but they were pretty comfortable chairs." (Salinger 18). In the short sentence, I furthermore get a glimpse of Holden's voice and personality, this time by seeing him contradict himself. He describes how sad looking and beat up the chair is, yet goes on to say how nice and comfortable it is. This to me is a very important clue to Holden's overall personality in regard to life.
Despite race discrimination around the world, there are still people who overcome and persevere through these challenges - often at great risk to themselves. During the 1930s, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, a small town called Maycomb held a trial against an innocent African American man accused of raping a Caucasian woman. The reader experiences life in Maycomb through the eyes of ten year old girl name Jean-Louise Finch, Scout. In this case, Atticus Finch, Scout’s father, was assigned to be the lawyer for the accused, Tom Robinson. However, Atticus has integrity and tries his best for Tom even if his own life is at risk.
Atticus's closing argument in To Kill a Mockingbird is a good display of several talking and writing styles such as ethos, pathos, and logos. His closing argument uses a tone that contributes to the persuasive effectiveness of his argument. Atticus Finch’s speech is an attempt to appeal to the jury to look beyond racial prejudice and to do what is right. I am going to attempt to analyze and show how Atticus uses these rhetorical strategies to contribute to the poignancy and effectiveness of his closing argument.

Atticus could not live with himself if he failed to give his utmost effort in clearing the accused, Tom Robinson’s, name. The lawyer feels that he has to do it. The people of Maycomb are small minded and hypocritical, Atticus Finch is not. Nothing can be done to make the towns people hear the truth. Tom Robinson, would be a free man, living with his family, if it wasn’t for the people of Maycomb.
Not only does Atticus agree to take Tom Robinson’s case, but he defends Tom from start to finish. By taking Tom’s case he’s agreeing to take the hate from everyone else in the town of Maycomb, and exposing himself and his family during those difficult times. Atticus shows great courage when he puts himself between Tom Robinson and the mob that has come for Tom. Atticus shows no fear and with courage, he once again honors his moral by protecting Tom’s life with his own. Another example of Atticus’s courage is when he had to shoot the rabid dog in front

Jean Louise Finch ‘Scout’ is a headstrong young girl who narrates the novel ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’, set in the fictitious County Maycomb over the span of three years. She is often found sporting dirty overalls or breeches and possesses a rather tomboyish personality, much to her aunt’s dismay. It says, “Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire... I know one person that I would call “ an Attacus” he was my seventh grade bible teacher, Mr. Andrianni. He reminds me of Atticus because of his defiance of what society deems acceptable in his own pursuit to become a more righteous man. Mr. A spoke out against other authorities in our lives and the lies they told us because they wanted to appear to be less controversial and uninformed. He also taught us that through the faults that he would bring to light we should still respect and obey those authorities unless complying would be a sin. Similarly, Atticus did not agree with the townspeople on their morals and he used those people as examples for his children to teach them right and wrong.

Romeo and Juliet went through misery just to be together in the end which they do end up being together just not in the way they intended it to be. The two of them loved each other so much that they sacrificed their own lives just because the feud would not let them be together. The family’s feud is at fault for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet because the name Montague and Capulet would have never mattered, Romeo and Juliet
During the 1930s the south was still raging with racism, and the thought of a black man raping a white woman lead to no further investigation whether it was true or false, he was simply sentenced to death. Atticus Finch, Toms adept lawyer, believed Soulfly in equality and justice for all and was more than happy to defend Tom Robinson with all his heart no matter his race. The Finch family felt very different than the majority of people in Maycomb Alabama. When Tom Robinson has accused the entirety of the town flocked to the courthouse to view the trial. Some with hopes for justice and liberty but most unapologetically hoping for an unfair sentence.
Martin Luther King Jr. gave one of the most significant speeches in American history. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, gave a closing argument in a court trial that caused an uproar in the south during the 1930’s. Their speeches were given several decades apart, but talked about the same social issues that come from deep-rooted racism.
