Hook. Ancient Greece, was a dominant empire known for refined sculpture and architecture. Greeks used these things to honor the many gods that they worshiped. The Greeks were polytheistic honoring multiple gods. This ancient civilization was captivated by religion with the worship of many gods. One of the most influential and powerful gods was Poseidon. Poseidon, an irritable and seductive Greek sea god worshiped by the Greeks because of what he could do for them and what he could do to them, was like a strict father who they both feared and loved. Some people believe the ancient Greeks were just tales known throughout ancient Greece but others still idolize polytheistic ancient Greece. One of the most famous novel series that features Poseidon is Percy Jackson. The series is a collection of Greek tales that follows a boy named Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon. Ancient myths still studied today include The Odyssey a tale told by the Greek poet Homer. The story follows the Greek hero Odysseus on his journey after the Trojan War. Many works of art have depicted Poseidon or the Roman god of the Sea Neptune. Poseidon is a god most frequently depicted in sculpture form with one prominent example being Poseidon of Melos. The statue is held in Athens, made of Parian marble, and stands at around seven and a half feet tall. The sea god is portrayed naked to the waist with his muscular right arm raised. Neptune has been represented through the art of John Izard Middleton who painted The Temple of Neptune. Middleton’s work of art is displayed at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina.
