Life over seventy years ago was much different than it is now. A small part of that change was because of one woman with a goal; to make a lasting impact. Not only was Audrey Hepburn a role model, feminist, mother, and ambassador for change, but she was one of the most influential women for fashion and acting during her time.
Before Audrey Hepburn the fashion industry and gender equality had a large need for change. Just before her rise to fame in the 50’s, “Society distinctly defined gender roles. Men were to work and financially provide for the family, and women managed the home and purchased groceries, goods, and services for daily life”(Lehman). During her rise to fame she was noticed for her love of fashion by one of the most influential designers in Hollywood, Edith Head, she claimed, “this young actress knew more about fashion than any actress”(Spoto). She was passionate about her looks and was even seen as “unusual for her time” yet that didn’t stop her from looking how she loved. Most actresses at the time just wore what they were given and followed the same popular trends. Audrey on the other hand always spoke up and had a say in what designers put her in. She was always confident and even, “Not afraid to wear comfortable and casual clothes, even though some people would not call it either girly or elegant. Audrey had the talent to look amazing and very stylish in everything”(Sofia). She was one of the first feminists during her time and influenced women to not care about how they look. Hepburn demonstrated to other young girls that looks don’t matter and you have to have confidence within yourself. She used her love for fashion to spread body positivity and change the fashion industry
