In Australia, refugees and asylum seekers are treated like the enemy in a war: the target of a highly resourced, military-led “deterrence” strategy complete with arbitrary detainment, detention camps, guards to terrorise them, forced deportations and the violent suppression of those who protest. Australia is failing to meet the standards required when regarding the treatment of asylum seekers. It is fact that asylum seekers make up less than 3% of Australia’s annual immigration yet the idea is being distorted to that of which they will overpopulate a country that prides itself on being a multicultural society. I want to shed light on the misconception that asylum seekers are not ‘legal’ when in actual fact it is a human right to seek freedom.
Australia Day is one of the most unique national day’s in the world throughout history, celebrating the day of when our ancestors first arrived on the borders of Australia, in 1788. Rather than unite people as one whole though, the spirited outcome of this event isn’t what as anticipated by everyone and has divided the Australian society for good. And so it should be held at an alternative date, where Australian citizens feel worthy of their identity and not cheated by it. However, the celebration shouldn’t be adapted to like that of other commemorations like ANZAC day. Essentially, this day will always be a tragic memory for the indigenous and be viewed as the invasion of their homeland.

Recently the highly contended date of Australia Day has been garnering much media attention after the town of Fremantle was the first in Australia to officially call off the celebrations that occur annually on the 26th of January. With heated debate both condemning, and supporting, this controversial move, public scrutiny of the date of Australia day has never been higher. Supporters of the move argue that having Australia day on a date associated with genocide and murder is insulting to all Australians, and prevents people from joining in on the festivities. Others condemn the move, arguing that the 26th of January is the traditional date of Australia Day and that it is merely a patriotic celebration for our home land.
The dignity of any nation rests upon the elements that it possesses, this speech entails one of those essential elements, the right to change the flag of Australia. In the 21st century, from a narrow scope, organizations and from a broader scope, countries have accepted globalisation and have understood the significance of keeping aside any cultural differences by collaborating together. A flag is a nation’s pride and it represents the nation in any circumstance. However, it is also a responsibility of a flag to represent all the people of the nation.

Kenny exposes this behaviour through appealing to the tradition and customs of Australians who may be reluctant to accept this behaviour, mirrored by his romanticising of the past, “Our nation was founded in a spirit of optimism and co-operation”, positions the audience to see the absurdity of this way of thinking, and align themselves with more old fashioned notions. It is this notion however, Martin Flanagan believes, will “drive us apart” showing that the view Kenny portrays would create a “divide” in our country. Explained in “The Problem with Australia Day”, Flanagan gives insight into the history of our national day, aligning audiences to concur with the evidence, which states John Howard is the instigator of Australia Day as we know it today.

A key part of being Australian is taking ownership of the world’s idea of us. Whether a tourist needs to know about Vegemite, or we are trying to convince a Taxi driver in NYC that we do, in fact, ride our pet kangaroo to work (true story), we are obsessed with taking ownership of every good thing our far and away continent has to offer.
