The business may use a range of information systems, identify them and discuss their role in supporting the business.
The business uses GRIN-Global, a new system internationally recognized by genebanks. As mentioned before a genebank has the purpose of preservation, growth and regrowth of seeds, the system of GRIN-Global is a designed for genebanks to store and manage information related to plant genetic resources and to make that information available globally.
Requesters such as educators, breeders and researchers worldwide are able to request germplasm through the GRIN-Global websites and genebanks supply to the requester what is requested. As a result of implementing GRIN-Global, a requester does not have to manually request seeds from the genebank through phone or email because they can do it online. The requester also has the capability of tracking an order. iii. Identify and discuss the roles and responsibilities of the IT administrator(s) (Network manager/IT manager) in the development, maintenance and use of the information system. The information system
i. Identify the objectives of the selected information system, what is its purpose? Discuss how the information system addresses the needs of the organisation.
The information system selected is Grin-Global. Grin-Global is a seed inventory for seed management. The objective of the APG is to distribute, preserve and grow seeds. The GG system efficiently allows requesters to check what seeds are available in order to request them for their own research purposes. For each seed there is an accession representing a seed’s taxonomical information or scientific name. All accession have an ‘APG’ prefix such as APG112019. Seeds are grown for the purposes such as feeding livestock, pollination or for control of other plants. The system provides information such as the country of origin however it’s up to the APG to show what to release to the
