SmartBarley, implemented by Anheuser-Busch to further their environmental goals, is an internal process analysis tool that is used to analyze in depth how Anheuser-Busch and its growers can be more efficient with growing and using barley. Essentially, SmartBarley is a barley benchmarking program aimed to produce higher yields of barley and increase water efficiency for barley growers (Petru). Anheuser-Busch works collaboratively with its barley growers by providing its continuous support (Petru). The types of support Anheuser-Busch provides include investing in development of improved varieties, access to quality seeds and inputs, and deploying skilled agronomists to assist growers in the art of producing malt barley (Anheuser-Busch, “FAQ”). Anheuser-Busch’s SmartBarley is a platform for its growers to benchmark their barley practices and performance across its global grower network. It allows growers to exchange best practices that drive productivity within their own farming operations. They are using it to compare their crop performance to others’ in their region and even globally. Some features of the benchmarking program that growers can utilize with SmartBarley is to see information related to irrigation water productivity, nitrogen use efficiency, yield realization and various health parameters (Petru). All the information gathered using SmartBarley, Anheuser-Busch has developed closer relationships with its suppliers to work in partnership to reliably produce and deliver different varieties of malt barley that support pre-existing brands as well as quickly bring more innovations in the market
