Obesity and Parenting
There have been many studies and research performed based on the topic of different parenting styles. The authoritative parenting style has been deemed as the most effective not only at home but also in the school environment as well. Children raised by an authoritative parent have positive outcomes such as confidence, academic success and independence. The authoritarian parenting style links many negative outcomes such as delinquent behavior and dependence because of the lack of a balance between warmth and discipline (Steinberg 128). This study provides yet another reason why the authoritative parenting style is indeed the best form of parenting. Though scientists cannot directly identify the reason why children with authoritarian parents are shown to be heavier than those with authoritative parents, it appears that children with authoritative parents also have the ability to participate in family discussions and decisions that in turn help themselves (Salaman). The article mostly focuses on children up to the age of 11. It also only focuses on one point in time instead of the course of childhood. Puberty generally takes place between the ages of 9-16.
