Now, it could be said that all of, or most of, Shaun's presenting symptoms lead to one critical diagnosis. A disorder that develops normally in one’s childhood years, like it did with Shaun. That disorder is known in the psychological community as Autism Spectrum Disorder. An individual with Autism usually expresses the universal characteristics of lacking in communication skills, being exceedingly non reactive with other human beings, and possessing concrete, ritualistic behaviors and/or interests (Comer, 2015). In addition, a child with Autism could have issues navigating areas that entwine around social skills, emotional skills and communication skills. They also may be more prone to develop sensory issues, strict routines, and other distressing or impairing conundrums (Comer, 2015).
All of these are present in Shaun Murphy. Shaun does lack “social emotional reciprocity” (Comer, 2015). This broad concept has already been demonstrated when he is trying to engage with a patient or their family members. Likewise, it is also seen in how he does not seem to connect with the ideals of love and fear with his friends and patients. Mostly this results because one, he just does not like to be squeezed. Second reason is because he thinks people squeeze to hard, thus causing him pain. Or perhaps Shaun has sensory issues, because he reacts to hugs in the same manner, Another example of his deficiency in nonverbal communication is seen when Shaun does not comprehend if his patient is reassured over his words and gestures. Even when he sees they are still ‘shaken up’, Shaun does little to try and comfort them in their time of need.
