A dictatorship is the everyday life of Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000. In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 lives in a society in which equality is enforced in the laws of the dictating society. No one can be different from anyone else, nor can one person spend more time with one person than another. Equality 7-2521 is dictated by the leaders of his society though he increasingly does not believe in his leaders morals. His morals and ethics follows the advice Ayn Rand offers in her essay “How Does One Lead a Rational Life in an Irrational Life?”
Bildungsroman, is a novel dealing with one person's formative years, or spiritual education. Such as, Anthem, a dystopian fiction novella by Ayn Rand, written in 1937. Anthem, is written as the diary of Equality 7-2521, a young man living in a futuristic time, in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, to the point of not even knowing the word “I.” Throughout the story, Equality longs for individuality in a collectivist society, knowing that it is a sin, he still strives to be who he wants to be, without any care of the government's rules. Throughout the novella, Equality consciously seeks individuality.
A utopia is considered a perfect place or state in which all of one's choices are chosen specifically by the person and for the person. In the short story “Survival Ship” by Judith Merril, a group of engineers are seeking this perfect world. Similarly, in the novella Anthem written by Ayn Rand, the setting here is also a utopian society where they follow the rules and don’t share uniqueness. Throughout both stories, similar themes are shared.
The Road to Individualism Every great heroin will face a plethora of conflict in their journey. For Equality, it is not any less. Equality faces internal and external conflict in his path to heroism, faces conflict with others, but also himself. As his desire for a new life grows, more problems arise.
Equality has the right to change his mind about the law because it isn 't a far law to everybody. It 's ironic that Ayn Rand called equality 7-2521 because he actually never really finds equality. From the being, he never understood why he was different and why he always got in trouble. He changes his mind about how society is wrong because at the end he learns in self-rights, much more technology, and the meaning of life should be. When equality was assigned with street sweeper he figured it was from his sins.
Which is worse: failing or never trying? That question is the one we all ask ourselves. I think that never try it is worse because you lock yourself in your comfort zone and in the end when not intending it you fail because you lose the opportunity know what will happen, you stay with the doubt and do not know if that could have been the best experience or a great achievement in your life. On the other hand, if you try and fail, you learn and if you learn improvements.
So we have talked about how all of our evidence has lead us to our theme -Not let yourself be controlled by others, be different, independent and outgoing, and, to not be afraid to seek knowledge and or be curious- so only thing left is to wrap it up. So this was a very interesting book with a lot of interesting and new ways of writing that I have never really seen before. We found it very interesting that this book was written so long ago would talk about such modern technology. We found this book to be kind of like the Hunger Games like how Katniss Everdeen and the districts are in this weird little dictatorship, hierarchy thing that's kind of like what Prometheus is in right now but instead of trying to abolish the government he is just trying to get away from the government so he can be free to be with his love Liberty 5-3000 and their child in peace without the fear of losing his child or being punished for loving Liberty 5-3000. We should all let this be a lesson to us that we shouldn't let others determine who we are or let ourselves be afraid to be ourselves.
The word “I” has a significant impact on our society. Its absence gradually lowers our society to have unjust expectations of people, and allow those expectations to influence our government. The book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is an example of this occurrence. There is no use of the word “I”, “my”, or any word that implies individuality, as it has been prohibited by the government.
Setbacks of this future Science and technology is an extensive part of our modern lives. What if we had all our technology taken away from us? Then, we were told that no one can be alone and you can't think on your own like in the story Anthem, by Ayn Rand. We wouldn't be able to read p, or choose where we wanted to work. In fact we would not have many of the great things we have today.
Collectivism: Comparing Anthem and Eye of the beholder Collectivism is the idea of putting the wants and needs of a group over a single person's. Collectivism is the basis of two societies in two separate pieces of work, Anthem by Ayn Rand and Twilight Zone episode Eye of the Beholder, written by Rod Serling. The leaders of these societies call upon similar rhetoric devices and radical ways to maintain a submissive and oppressed society.
The Happiness of Humans One of the most influential scientists, Albert Einstein once wrote,”Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” This shows how kindness and selflessness can impact other lives and happiness. These dystopian passages display how kindness and being selfless can go a long way and really is the key to happiness and how people's moods can change just by one simple act of kindness. In the narrative Anthem by Ayn Rand, novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and the poem Good Bones by Maggie Smith, a fireman who burns books thinks hes happy and gets questioned by a girl named Clarisse about how he is happy about burning books and finds out he is not happy and is loss and later comes to realization that he does not like
Robert Frost once said, “If society fits you comfortably enough, you can call it freedom”. Most people can relate to this quote, but what if an individual does not agree or feel comfortable in his or her social system? In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand shows her willingness to leave an unjust society through Equality leaving his community, purposefully breaking laws, and pursuing his discoveries. The first way Rand proves that she does not agree with her society, is through the main character of the book, Equality, running away from his society. Rand states that Equality’s actions that she will do what it takes to leave her society.
Have you ever felt like a total outsider? In Anthem Ayn Rand shows a perspective from a young boy in a dystopian society. In the far future what lies ahead, no one knows. In this story you get an idea of one scary scary possibility.
Modern Societies Society today is considered as modern. Everyday, new trends, new styles, new models, and new looks are presented to the world. However, that is not what being modern means. To be modern means to be ambitious and to work hard to live in a way that’s desired for oneself. It means to express one’s opinions with the intent of leaving the traditional ways of the past, to improve the society in which one lives in.
