After World War two had ended both the United States and the Soviet Union, also known as the USSR, had become reigning countries in the world. While both held great power it also caused chaos leading to extreme rivalry and the Cold War. Since this rivalry between these two nations was foreign is caused a great deal of effect on the United States foreign policy however it also deeply damaged the United States domestic policy through the fear of potential attacks of atomic bombs, the changes in the U.S defense budget, and the constant fear of the spread of communism within the nation. For example in Document number 5, an image shows a man building a bomb shelter near his home during 1951.
On August 6, 1945, the first of two atomic bombs was dropped on Japan, sparking the start of what is now known as the Cold War. Two large military powers, the Soviet communists and the United States of America, pitted their wits and defense against each other, using any means necessary to find cracks in the others’ defenses. Three days later, the second atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, which shook the world with its deafening death toll. The world immediately took up arms in the following years, sparking some of the most controversial years in history. Suspicion turned brothers against sisters, neighbors against neighbors, and caused many lives to be ruined.

As of now, America has educated itself to know the real dangers of nuclear testing is and by hiding under a desk would not help with the risk of lives. Currently, there is now a threat of a nuclear bomb in which is threatened several times by some countries to America. Leaving what happened with Pearl Harbor and the effects of bombs from the atomic bombs to be prepared as a nation for anything that might happen.
Effects of Cold War on United States domestic policy and society As World War II got closer to an end, the U.S. and the Soviet Union gained great power, and the competition with these two countries increased in many fields like the development of nuclear technology. However, at the same time, relationships between these two countries deteriorated especially due to the conflict of the ideology which is defined as the Cold War started in 1947 and ended 1991. Both domestic policy and society in the U.S. were greatly affected by the Cold War. However, the effect on American society was mostly negative as the conflicts of citizens due to fear of Communism and effect on normal life show.

During the Cold War people were worried about other country's using nuclear weapons such as the nuclear bomb on us, The United States. So they decided to come up with a plan to save their lives if we were ever to get attacked. It started off with drills, when the siren went off school kids would hide under their desks, and others would stand in a safe and secure area. But what about the people closer to the bomb, and the fallout? That is when fallout shelters would come into place.
Education and technology changed in a massive way during the Cold War. This was because during the Cold War, the United States was on a race with the Soviet Union to get the best technology and one up each other in education, economy political influence, etc. Technology was also heavily influenced because of the War. Some of the things the Soviets and Americans invented weren 't expected for another couple of years and were way ahead of their time. Some of the things invented were Direct Distance Dialing, basic computer language, L.E.D lights, and our very first satellites.
It was apparent that a psychological warfare strategy needed to be used in order to build fear in the Soviet Union and constantly keep them motivated to seek after what the U.S. was hiding. By keeping the Soviets occupied on the U.S. advancements with the atomic bomb it forced them to grasp at straws for information and to pursue a partnership or a way in that would guarantee them safety if or when the U.S. ever decided to use atomic energy as a weapon. Once the weapon was used to end the war in Japan it forced the Soviet Union to pull back away from Asia and end their pursuit of an invasion of Japan and forced Japan to end the war. The Cold War lasted forty-four years and left a lasting social impact on the United States. The spread of communism and The Soviet Union left many Americans in a constant state of fear and paranoia. The space race between the United States and The Soviet Union significantly impacted the education system in the United States and the curriculum that was taught for years to come. The social emphasis on gender caused a crisis on American masculinity and feminism by influencing many to assume certain gender roles and feel that they were not masculine enough or too feminine because of their view on communism. The Cold War socially impacted the United States through fear, education, and gender.
