Easy Habits Easy Death Newspapers, news channels, books, videos, posters, and doctors all with the same word, obesity! The one word the 21st century has reiterated millions of times and up until this day it has proved ineffective to erase it from the American vocabulary. To many the word itself conveys a harmless meaning. Yes the individual is overweight but what harm can extra pounds do? The consequences of these extra pounds may not be immediate, but it is ensured that they’ll catch up and possibly become a factor of an earlier death to a loved one or yourself. The effects of selling out such food may be the last thing in their mind. In Mark Bittman’s article Bad Food? Tax It, and Subsidize Vegetables, he implies this same statement when he asserts, “Their mission is not public health but profit.”(4). Achieving large amounts of profit is the focus for each company. This is how society works, the more money, the more power, and power is what many aim for. As Brownlee further asserts “…the imperatives of the marketplace are growth and rising profits”(7). This is the reality and fast food chains expect their consumers to have a basic understanding of the health risks unhealthy food carry. Nevertheless the exponential increase of the obesity epidemic shows the ignorance of these customers. Thus educating society about the harms these foods contains, is an effective solution. Having the millennials generation educate the upcoming generations about eating habits will be most effective because the teaching will serve as a warning. Obesity and overweight are now the second leading cause of death in the United States, and the disappointing truth is that both are preventable diseases. People give up to easily when it comes to adapting to change. Changing eating habits is a difficult task to do if a strong mindset is not in place. Fast food is tempting and the body is easily manipulated by it. Therefore when doctors place restrictions on people’s diet the results are rarely effective. Living lifestyles where fast food are the daily meal and later participating in sedentary activities are ultimately becoming murders. The body is exposed to excessive amounts of calories and lacking the ability to burn effectively leads to an accumulations of fats around the body. This buildup then leads to overweight and eventually obesity. Arteries around the body start to block off, blood pressure levels are increased, and then the chances of a heart stroke become greater. Ultimately people will die because they lacked enough responsibility to put an end to their unhealthy eating habits. Little effort was made to keep them living and this is a regrettable
