The business we chose to focus our project on is Publix Supermarkets. On Sept. 6, 1930, founder George Jenkins opened his first store, called Publix Food Store, in Winter Haven Florida. Today Publix has grown to be Florida’s largest employer with 168,500 employees and run 1,080 stores. Total sales in 2013 were 28.9 billion, relatively large for a regional corporation. Their mission statement is “To be the premier food quality retailer in the world,” and they’re doing an excellent job at it.
On April 15, 2017 at approximately 1127 hours, I responded to Chic-Fil-A located at 80 Oxford Road in reference to a suspicious person. Upon arrival I observed a black male with no shirt on, carrying a backpack at the neighboring convenience store. I made contact with the subject and his girlfriend who identified themselves by name and D.O.B. as David C. Bishop 01/29/1997 and Jennifer L. Buchanan 03/04/1975. I immediately observed Bishop’s left hand was covered in blood at which time I asked him how he hurt his hand. Bishop stated that he had been arguing with his girlfriend after she nearly drove into another vehicle at which time he became upset at her, so he punched the window seal.
Unlike in Cecil where the record arguably showed the employer would not have suffered economic hardship, here the undisputed facts prove that BWO would have likely suffered immense economic hardship. Nancy Silverton, founder of La Brea Bakery, and her husband started out looking for a space for a restaurant, and in the process, La Brea Bakery was created. Starting on what Russ Parsons, writer of the article “Nancy Silverton Looks Back at 25 years of La Brea Bakery,” describes as a “hopped-up mess of various businesses on a somewhat dingy stretch of La Brea Avenue,” and growing to have larger operations on Washington Boulevard, Van Nuys, and more. The history of La Brea Bakery continues to be written as each year passes, but the success of the business didn’t come problem free. In the article by Parsons, Silverton reflects on the difficulties she faced when La Brea Bakery first opened and more as the business continued to grow.
