Banning Books Essay

For centuries books have been gateways to knowledge, stories, ideas, and many other things. But with the thousands and thousands of books throughout time controversy is sure to emerge. This controversy can lead to the challenging or banning of books by leaders, governments, or the general population. Many people disagree with whether or not banning books is a valid process. Some believe it is against basic human rights and others see it as a protective method against harmful ideas breaching people, in this case mainly children. For instance in the United States many people believe the banning of books is against the first amendment specifically the right to a free press. When it comes to the side against the banning and censorship of books some good points are made. Going back to the American Library Association multiple points are made that are valid such as, “Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.” It is important to the progression of society that censorships are not placed even on extreme or dangerous ideas because these can be learned from and discussed. It is true though, that these ideas getting to children could be very detrimental to them. So in that case it is up to parents to censor these books from their children themselves if they choose. Another agreeable point the American Library Association makes is them stating that, “Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.” Similarly to the last one the censorship of historical books would only lead to harm and hindrance of society. Again people must learn from mistakes especially from history. Attempting to destroy the history that has already occurred is a threatening maneuver to society’s growth. And no matter the case, banning and censorship of books is against the first amendment granted to the American people. And this does not mean anyone should be forced to read something if they do not choose to. The freedom to choose is still there for all, at least in America. If a parent doesn’t want their child reading something they can choose not to allow them to read it themselves.
