Basic Law Enforcement Training, is an adult education program offered on the campus of Davidson County Community College (DCCC), located on Thomasville, North Carolina. I have chosen to focus program visit on this particular program as it brings many unique and innovative pedagogies together to insure the highest quality graduates. As a Type II provider, this institution has a variety of resources to draw from in terms of both student and faculty. The ability to utilize the resources of the traditional college environment as well as integrating an active practical proficiency relying adjunct faculty from multiple law enforcement agencies. Major Ronnie Phillips (Ret.), serves as the school director for the Basic Law Enforcement Program at DCCC. Phillips brings with him thirty years of law enforcement experience, spanning four decades of service with the Thomasville Police Department where he retired at the rank of Assistant Chief. He explained that many changes have occurred in the terms of training officers over the course of his career, and especially since he was a member of the first basic Law Enforcement Class offered at DCCC. On the fifth test failure the student will be removed from the program and not allowed to continue with their class. Phillips noted that students were previously only allowed three failures, however with the colleges implementation of Completion by Design, that number was raised. Students are also assessed during the practical exercises to assure that they are able to complete the minimum standards. It is critical that students are competent in areas such as Subject Control, Driving and Firearms, as their lives and that of others may depend on this training. Instructors will complete check off sheets insuring each item is thoroughly covered, and those training records will be retained
