People who are law enforcement officers or strive to be law enforcement officers need to understand that not everyone in the community are criminals, or “wolves” looking to do harm. A true well rounded professional law enforcement officer should have the capability to be that sheepdog or guardian and when the time is needed, which will happen sometime in his or her career, is willing and capable to turning the warrior mentality on instantly. And once that officer is able to survive that situation, the police officer is going to need to be capable and willing to turn that warrior mentality off, and go back to the sheepdog or guardian
A.) The social problem that the article “When Schooling Meets Policing” is focusing on is the negative issues police officers have on students and their education when police officers are in the school. B.) The big problem that is emphasized in the article is what police officers are doing to young children when the children misbehave. One issue that is emphasized in the article is when at water balloon fight at a high school went down as a senior prank, eight students were arrested and two dozen police officers came to the campus. Students are being arrested for spit balls, temper tantrums, and other childish things that kids are expected to do at that age. In the past the education system would discipline the students with detention or something similar, but now the police officers are actually arresting students for very small things.
There are many views out there that favor militarization of the police and just as many that oppose it. A common reason that shows the positive side of militarization is local police are given the resources where they can handle more types of events solely by themselves, without having to call for outside help from the National Guard. It can take hours and sometimes days for the National Guard to show up when they are called upon to assist a local police force. Another popular pro is police officers are equipped with better firearms and training. Police officers would also have access to bigger, more powerful military style vehicles to use at a moments notice.
Policing Tactics are Unjust In 2012, an African American was murdered every 28 hours by either police officers or persons of authority (Hudson). Of this amount, 43% of murders occurred as a result of racial profiling (Hudson). Police officers are tasked with the duty of protecting people across the nation; however, in a time of urgency, officers are instead harming the people. Although some believe police are behaving in a justified manner, the unnecessary brutality and racial profiling is caused by an inherent belief of white superiority and an internal fear of African Americans.
The militarization of police has become an increasingly contentious issue in the United States, with concerns raised about the scope, mission, and perception of law enforcement agencies across the country. The concept of militarization refers to the adoption of military tactics, equipment, and strategies by police departments, a process which began in 1965 with the inception of SWAT teams in Philadelphia (). With the aim of law enforcement being the enhancement of capabilities in high-risk situations, this outcome was inevitable. The militarization of police has intensified and expanded since that time, with military vehicles, equipment, and weapons becoming commonplace across the country. A large contributor to this phenomenon has been the

Police officers are the wardens of our society, they are tasked with a duty that weighs on them like Atlas. The average man cannot not match this burden and even some police officers cannot reach the standards of their fellows. So, what happen when a police office is found to be corrupted? A new method of dealing with police corruption has been adopted in liberal states like California, Washington, and New York, Civilian oversight.
Should it be their job to make a habit of executing that training? No, unless really deemed necessary. I think we should leave that to the other guys and have the police continue to focus on building trust within our
The reason why come police officers oppose community policing is because they are resistant to change. According to the course text, police administrators, supervisor and line personnel frequently resist change of any kind and prefer the status quo (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014). In my opinion, officers are opposed to community policing because they are used to doing things a certain way and community policing requires changes in management styles, vision and mission statements, and the overall departments organization structure. In addition, most police officers will find change to their culture threatening (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014).
Law enforcement is constantly changing. Criminals are incredibly smart when it comes to committing crimes and hiding their tracks, and the legislature and court system at the state and federal level are constantly changing what can and cannot be done by law enforcement. To be a productive and effective police officer means to stay on top of statute changes, case law, and new way that criminals commit crimes. As a police chief, I am very much in favor of training my officers to keep them well informed about how law enforcement
“This city sent a message, loud and clear, that this kind of reckless behavior exhibited by members of law enforcement will not and shall not be tolerated.”; stated by the victims’ brother, Anthony Scott. This goes to show that the police force is one of the most visible features of governance in the United States. The police force was set to be looked upon as a form of public organization committed with the obligation of enforcing the law. However, for as long as they have lived in this world, police departments have obtained a significant amount of public scrutiny over the issues of wrongdoing, corruption, unfairness, lack of professionalism, and an unnecessary excessive amount use of force. The occurrences of police misbehavior and police-public
The public has a misconception that deadly force is the same thing as excessive force. They can be similar if the police use deadly force to a point where every officer discharges their entire magazine on person when the threat has been eliminated. Officers receive hours of training on how to shoot a gun, but sometime receive little instruction on how to determine when to use the gun. Training starts in the Police Academy, and continues throughout their careers. There are officers who teach and train the departments every month.
