While Darius was king, the Ionians revolted against the Persians and this revolt is what led to the battle of Marathon. A man named Aristagoras led the revolt and he had tried convincing the Spartans to aid the Ionians. The Spartan King Cleomenes refuses to help. Next, Aristagoras goes to Athens, gives them the same speech he gave the Spartans, and somehow persuaded them to help and send twenty ships. During this revolt, the city of Sardis was set ablaze because a soldier set a house on fire, which quickly spread. After this, the Persians defeated the Ionians and captured the city of Miletus, where they killed the men and enslaved the women and children. The Athenians then abandoned the Ionians. Themistocles fought in this battle and eventually “the work he did saved Athens during the Persian Wars,” (Green, pg. 26), and he was elected the “Chief Archon of Athens,” which means he was the chief of the nine magistrates in Athens. During the battle, neither the Athenians or Persians moved for several days. The Athenians were hoping the Spartans would show up to assist them in the battle and that is why they were waiting. Then Miltiades heard that the Persian cavalry was away and this is when the Athenians decided it was time to engage because it was possible that they stood a chance. When this happened, the Persians “thought that the Athenians had lost their senses and were bent on self-destruction, for they were inferior in number and came on at a rush without cavalry or archers,” (Herodotus, pg. 113). The According to Herodotus, in this battle, 6,400 Persians were killed and only 192 Athenians were killed. The Spartans had arrived at the battle after it already ended, with 2,000 troops.
