In the 1950s, Texas was at the forefront of two major, but very different civil rights movements—the African-American movement and the Mexican-American movement. Fighting Their Own Battles by Brian Behnken describes and compares the separate battles for rights of the two movements. People in Texas knew what was happening and newspapers reported about the different events that occurred throughout the 1950s. In hindsight, and with the help of Behnken’s book, one is able to see the subtle influences of both civil rights movements in the Texas newspapers. At the time however, these differences in strategy between the African-American and Mexican-American movements were not so easily understood.

In Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s game, Valentine says that, “the curse of Wiggin children is intelligence” (238). What she meant by this quote was that Ender intelligence is a curse for him. Ender has been selected in the first place itself because he is smart, intelligence and like Graff said, “that he is genius among geniuses” (34). The teachers openly admit that “I can make you guys believe anything. I can make you dance around like puppets” (Card 26).

Sometimes what you don’t know can hurt you. My first Boy Scout outing was a good example. There was a total of 32 scouts and a few adult leaders attended. In this outing, I made a lot of mistakes because I didn’t know what to do or bring. My clothes were too thick, and the cars that the scouts rode in were like sardine fish cans, which made me feel like the sun was scorching me.
One was evil, and one was good. In the other story, the two kids evened each other out instead. Another thing that was different was the amount of animals.
