My capstone project is about the need for nurses to learn about cultural diversity, cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. This has been a fascinating project to explore and I am learning about so many cultural beliefs. When a patient's cultural practice is understood competent patient care is rendered and health care disparities are eliminated. I am deciding to apply to the University of Wisconsin-Madison because I am intrigued by the opportunities the university has to offer. During my time at UW-Madison I hope to participate in intramural sports, get a job, receive an excellent education, and much more. The city life offers a diverse culture and allows you to learn about and to appreciate life. As I want to be a part of the nursing program I would utilize the opportunity to work at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and to work alongside other students trying to achieve the same goal as I am.
Right now, nurses all over the country are busy taking care of sick patients. Healthcare is continually evolving and changing. It seems like patient’s needs are becoming greater by the day. We’ve been told for years now that with the aging of the baby boomers the need for nurses will grow. These patients are often complex with multiple medical problems that need to be managed.
I currently have a Bachelors of Arts in Aging Studies and use that degree working with the older adult population at a Skilled Nursing Facility. I'm working on my prerequisites to obtain my second Bachelors in Nursing, where I'm hoping to become a Registered Nurse. As a novice practitioner and member of the health care team I believe I have come a long way from when I first began the nursing program. I have expanded on my communication skills with patients and overall knowledge of nursing. Within the hospital setting I am now more confident than I have ever been before. What does nursing mean to me? Nursing means helping people heal, meeting their needs while they are in your care, listening to concerns, protecting them from harm, and educating them how to care for themselves while treating them with dignity, compassion and respect and giving of yourself to the care of people and community. It is having compassion for people and their health and being a humanitarian, making sure they receive the best care possible. Nurses must also treat families of patients with kindness, realizing they are going through a stressful situation also. Nursing is a responsibility to provide the best care regardless of the patient’s age, race, religion, sex, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or their past.
For public, what they think about nursing? They may think nursing is a process, which take care of clients physically until they recover. In my opinion, I think nursing is a responsibility and knowledge-based tasks; it is used to improve the health state of all types of client. On responsibility aspect, it helps clients reducing their pain during treatment or recovery period and taking care to them physically and mentally. Nursing needs to think about what the clients needs and what is good for them.
