As part of the nursing pathway at school, we are given an opportunity to work one on one with real residents at a nursing home. When I began working with these wonderful people, I was saddened by their inactivity and complacency. As a result I wanted to be a source of their joy not just a care giver doing a job. Therefore I dedicated myself to create an atmosphere where these humble residents are able to enjoy their golden years. Nonetheless I began to create a strong bond with the residents I would read to them, talk to them, as well as care for them.
Nurses are every day heroes who not only dedicate their compassion to care for the vulnerable and ill but nurses must attain the proper training and education to provide quality health care. Ever since I was a little girl my dream was to make a positive difference. I am fortunate that I’ve had the opportunity to share my love and compassion with the elderly, rehabilitation patients, chemical dependency patients and individuals with diverse disabilities through my role as a Certified Nursing Assistant since 2006. Nursing is my calling.
I currently have a Bachelors of Arts in Aging Studies and use that degree working with the older adult population at a Skilled Nursing Facility. I'm working on my prerequisites to obtain my second Bachelors in Nursing, where I'm hoping to become a Registered Nurse. In the interim I'm looking to work for an organization that focuses on providing quality healthcare so that I can continue to gain valuable knowledge that will help me be successful in my short term and long term goals as a healthcare provider.
After a substantial career in the military and correctional service, I have found myself settled in the world of higher education. The employment experience as an undergraduate student worker opened my eyes to the extraordinary opportunity to help others attain their dreams of a university level education. The realization of a new calling was solidified after being hired as a classified employee in student serves upon receiving my bachelor’s degree in Information Systems. In less than a year of employment I have experienced the joy that comes from assisting prospective and current students navigate the complexities of the academic stetting.
Our goal for this program is to promote healthy social and emotional child development within the classroom. Because social and emotional skills are vital for cognitive development at a young age, we will try different methods for ensuring that these skills are met. Our ideal goal as teachers is to help students develop intrinsic motivation that will hopefully allow them to become life-long learners. According to the Mozart Study, when children are engaged and enjoying an activity they have more motivation to learn. We will try and provide an exciting environment within the classroom in order to actively engage our students.
The goal I set for myself was to exercise and to try to work out three times a week. My goal was not to work out to lose weight but instead to be more active, to feel less stressed, and to be and feel healthier. Throughout the semester I had some successes and some difficulties as well. When I first started working towards accomplishing my goal it was very easy to follow my plan. I initially came up with a schedule so that I would know what times worked best for me to workout.
I believe this experience will help me in my future career as a nurse because it allowed me to see how important it is to individualize
My strongest point, as determined from the profile, is in Category 6, the “Think Win-Win” habit. During my time in my current job, I believe I have developed a stronger “win together” attitude as part of my management personality. I also have found it to be very personally and professionally important to help others within my group to develop their skills and help them seek their true potential. I have worked with various people who do not have confidence in themselves and their work and have the mindset that making mistakes is bad and will end negatively for them, like getting fired for something that is generally unimportant. I have encouraged them to be more proud of their work and to not sweat the small things and learn from their mistakes.

As the 6th child in a family of 10, I grew up witnessing the struggle that my parents went through to get us to where we are today. We came to America when I was five years old and we were stuck in a two bedroom apartment until my parents saved up enough money to move out. We were very poor and had very little money for food. Eating once a day was the harsh reality and the constant headaches from not having enough calories inside my system will always be in my memories. My brothers and I didn’t understand why the other students had better clothes to wear or why we couldn’t go on any fieldtrips.
After completing week three, my experience at Indiana County Head Start continues to only get better. Taking on the responsibilities of an intern at Head Start was a task I never saw myself accomplishing. During my undergraduate work, I thought that I never wanted to work with young children. I was once scared of boogers, accidents (dirty diapers), showing affection, etc. However, accepting the role at Head Start has helped me overcome all my fears in just three short weeks.
As clinical at Mayo has finally concluded, I reflect on the nurse that I was at the beginning of the year, to the middle of the year, and now the nurse that I am at the end of the year. An immense amount of growth has taken place, even from the middle of the year until now. I have learned many new skills, as well as refined skills that I had more confidence in. The second half of the semester I learned to become more autonomous; especially toward the end of the semester.
I was able to witness nurses who loved not only their jobs but also their patients; but I also noticed others who were there only because they were well paid. Seeing the differences between these two types of nurses and the many experiences I’ve had with them in hospitals throughout my life has showed me exactly what kind of nurse I would like to be. They showed me that I want to be the kind of nurse who shows compassion for her patients and their families. I want nursing to be so much more than just a job. With all of the influences I’ve witnessed over the years I know that nursing is something I can truly excel in.
Reflecting on the past, I can recall an event that occurred in my life with a positive change result. After graduating from nursing school, I got a job offer in critical care at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. As a new nurse, I was fearful of starting a new job at such a large healthcare facility. I felt somewhat incompetent of my nursing skils because there is a still lot for me to learn about caring for critical patients. I can recall my first day of unit orientation, I was both frightened and excited about my new venture.
