I found Christine Candio’s on changes in the health care landscape to be a powerful personal narrative that I could relate to. Christine touched on some very poignant and relatable topics, often connecting her points back to nurses and nursing students. I personally found that her analogy of a “wave” of new healthcare regulations and practices and her explanation of why she loves nursing resonated the most with me reflectively. Change, as Christine notes, is a fundamental and necessary part of the medical field. However, sometimes a lot of changes all at once can be overwhelming to healthcare workers – especially nurses who deal with patients most frequently.

My biggest concern with improving quality care and patient safety issues in that, the responsibility is not ours alone, our Chief Nurse Executives (CNEs) and Director of Nursing (DON), and senior nursing management staffs to lead the journey Disch J. (2008). I find it overwhelming that the majority of the research literature (studies, surveys and reports believe nursing plays the pivotal role in changing the face of health care and improving quality care and patient safety.
After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. I knew my desire to care for individuals in a more autonomous role and I set out to develop the skills needed to meet the need I witnessed.
As we transition into the new role of NPs, our scope of practice expands. Moreover, as our responsibilities increase, we later become policy makers, and develop autonomy and decision–making skills. NPs are responsible for providing safe nursing care with more specialized knowledge and advanced education. We are also responsible for pursuing continuing education and advanced knowledge to remain competent quality providers, and meet the needs of the community. With our acquired repertoire of skills, it is essential that we utilize them to make informed decisions and collaborate with our community to promote wellness and healthy living.
Heather, we work in very different areas of nursing. You work in critical care and I work in a postpartum unit which normally has a healthy patient population. I find nursing to be a great field to work in with seamlessly endless opportunities. Giving everyone a platform to work in an environment of their calling or passion. Do you agree?
The days of staying at a job until retirement have gone by the wayside. The next ten to twenty years are predicted to have a shortage in nursing (Lartey, Cummings & McGrath, 2014). Administrations and managements systems are diligently studying the possible strategies to promote productivity, decrease call offs and improve retention in the nursing positions (Lartey, Cummings & McGrath, 2014). There is prediction of a shortage of nurses by the year 2018, which will be augmented by nurses retiring, changes in health care delivery and other financial changes (Grossman & Valiga, 2013).
The above motivations influenced the collaboration between Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Institute of Medicine, which culminated in the release of “Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”
Due to hospital care reaching an all-time high in America, we need nurses now more than ever before. Currently in America, we have an issue with nurses having too many paperwork to fill out. In the article “We Need More Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins argues we need more nurses in the hospital. Nursing shortage has been a common issue throughout the world. Because of this issue others are being affected in many different ways.
Health care as a whole in our country is evolving, becoming more complex as the health care needs of our respective communities change and also becoming complicated. Conversely, changes in the nursing profession are occurring on an everyday basis in an attempt to keep up with the different dynamics happening in our health care landscape today. These changes include, added responsibilities, increased demand in additional training and nurses charged with furthering their education. Health organizations and schools should engage in a conscious effort to increase the number of nurses with a baccalaureate degree (BSN) to 80 percent by 2020 (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010). IOM (2010) further recommended in their landmark, Future of Nursing report,
Healthcare is an ever-evolving continuum consisted of many changes that occur in a day-to-day basis. The need of continuing education is necessary for us to advance our skills and knowledge as nurses caring for the general population. However, advanced knowledge that goes beyond the science of nursing is crucial to excel in the field. Excellence in nursing requires us to be politically active and informed of the constant changes that occur within the health care system. It is also important to be aware of the accessible resources and organizations to be able to seek the proper resources needed.
As mentioned before, an increase of technology use is a major influence on nursing, the introduction of evidence-based practice in the professional field and in the educational environment plays a role in a nurse’s everyday life. As a nursing student, I have a grasp on what nursing is through textbooks and lectures. The more I learn about this profession, the more I learn about what my philosophy is. Although I haven’t gained clinical experience as a nurse, I have gained some clinical experience as a nurse assistant that helps me administer patient care while acquiring knowledge working under the supervision of nurses. This experience helps me to become knowledgeable on what their roles and responsibilities are, and it has inspired me that I hope when I graduate, to equal their skill, diligence and passion.
When I was in Junior high school and Senior high school, lecture style was pretty common at the English class. The teachers were always in front of students, and some students did not listen to what teachers said. English class at Junior high school was better than the class at Senior high school. The teachers at Junior high school were trying to make students speak in English. They always pointed out some students and asked questions.
