Beauty and the Beast
Fairy tales have been a huge part of literature for generations. A fairy tale is a short story that would often include an imaginary part either in the characters or plot. Fairy tales at first were passed down orally, but eventually were written down. As time went on fairy tales began to change from their original version. They began to become sugarcoated and much happier instead of the dark and twisted original story. There are many components of a fairy tale such as symbols, characters, background, and themes. Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont uses symbols, characters, background, and themes to create a fairytale of details and layers. Throughout the tale, Leprince de Beaumont uses all these components to create Beauty and the Beast. Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont’s purpose for writing Beauty and the Beast was to inform the youth the proper way to live life.

Leprince de Beaumont was born in 1711 in Rouen. After her first marriage failed, “she left for England in 1745 to take post as governess”. She then raised several children with her husband M. Pichon (“The Annotated Classic Fairy Tales” 340). She ‘saved ‘Beauty and the Beast’ for later generations, [and] she gave it earnestness [instead of] seriousness” (Sale 58). Leprince de Beaumont revised the extremely long and detailed version by Madame de Villeneuve. Along with the extreme length of the original version of Beauty and the Beast it was also very serious. Leprince de Beaumont revised this tale to make it more interesting and less boring. Later on in her life she returned to France to carry on her publishing until she died in Haute-Savoie, her country estate (“The Classic Annotated Fairy Tales” 340).
