My research centers around Mexican immigrant women working as certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in Bellingham, Washington. As the first line of care in eldercare institutions, CNAs spend more time with residents than any other staff members, performing the most intimate tasks. Belied by its low-wage, low-status ranking within the industry, the work of a CNA involves a great deal of skill and interpretation of the clients’ needs. Interestingly, positive scores for eldercare facilities in Washington have been associated with the presence of more immigrant caregivers, with the indication that this may come from the “motivation and characteristics of the workers themselves” (Acker et al. 2015, 665)”
CNA’s are in high demand. Unfortunately, there are usually far more positions open than there are applicants, as CNA’s are not among the higher paying positions available in the healthcare industry. However, these individuals can gain a tremendous wealth of knowledge by attending CNA classes, and they can build on this knowledge throughout their medical careers. At any rate, people who go through the classes have the chance to work in an environment that serves others, often in their worst times of need. CNA classes are an effective way of teaching people how to care for another individual.
It mainly originated from America and possibly other European countries who also needed nursing assistance during World War I and II. Due to the substantial amount of casualties from the 20th century wars, nursing aides were heavily depended on. This catalyzed the step for CNAs to be a part of the hospital and aide nurses with patients. Afterwards, nursing assistants flourished across the world. CNAs have become an integral part of the hospital community and environment.
Being in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) class with Ms.Pennington is always interesting. We attend class every morning during the week from 9:00am.m to 11:30am. The main thing that we work on is all the procedures we need for the residents. But we also work on how to keep the resident safe, and comfortable. Being in the CNA class helps us move forward in the medical field.
Nevertheless, I applied to the University of Texas at Arlington’s nursing program and was accepted in Fall 2014. That opened the doors to countless opportunities for me to find my spark. Through my lectures and clinical rotations, I was taught that being a nurse meant ensuring the safety of every patient and working arduously to maintain their quality of life. With that principle in mind, I practiced my skill as a nursing student on every unit that I was assigned to.
Since a child I was always held responsible for attending doctor 's appointments with my parents due to their language barrier. Surprisingly, I never felt that responsibility as a burden because hospitals intrigued me. The polar emotions of safety and fear simultaneously, fascinated me. With this awareness when I began taking science courses at North Shore Community College, I found that the subject also fascinated me. The components of liking the hospital and material, had led me to the realization that I had a calling for the medical field.
What information do you do you feel is most important for a recent graduate as an Advance Practice Nurse? “Pathophysiology is very
However, I only recently felt compelled to become a physician upon receiving my certified nurse assistant certification. By assisting the elderly as a CNA, I finally understood the tremendous impact that a healthcare professional could have on improving a patient ’s quality of life. Seeing the looks on the patient’s face after helping them, even with menial, daily tasks, made the entire job worth it; no other career could provide the same satisfaction of making a visible difference in a person’s life.
There will always be a need for a skilled certified nursing assistants, whether it is in a hospital or in a nursing home. Being a CNA, there is a lot to take on and deal with; this type of job you have to be ready physically, emotionally, and mentally. There will always be a need for a skilled nursing assistants at a hospital or nursing homes. All of the job responsibilities a CNA is required to complete can wear you out, but when you get to see that the patient having trust in you and feeling confident that you know what is best for them, is its own reward. There are some people who do not know what a CNA does and the lack of knowledge may result in them believing that they are not an important member to the health care team.
When I picture myself, I have faced many challenges in my life and realized how much i’ve grown and changed from them, just in the last year. The most important challenge that I am proud of myself for accomplishing is becoming a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA). Obtaining this certificate was a huge step in my life from childhood to adulthood. I became an LNA because my mother encouraged me to since she knew I always wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a child and I love helping other people out.
The accumulation of my work experience combined with my unrelenting desire to understand more leads me to pursue a graduate degree with UCF’s Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. Every step in my nursing journey has built upon the previous role with the intention of gaining the knowledge and clinical skill set necessary to become the most effective patient advocate. This graduate program can take the current knowledge to a deeper level, one where I can develop care plans of multiple care processes to optimize patient outcome. I know that a graduate education is an important step towards meeting my desire to participate in a more critical role in health
Isaiah Clements Period.3 Mrs.Vargas Registered Nurse When I was five years old I cut my finger while helping my mother make guacamole. My mother rushed me to the hospital because this wasn’t an ordinary cut, we got to the hospital I was frantically fussing until nurse Judy puts me at ease with a sucker. Ever since that day I have wanted to become a nurse. Throughout this research process and job shadow I hope to determine if I will be pursuing this career field after high school.
It 's true, not everyone is fit to be a CNA. Being able to care for the elderly and bring happiness to their day, brings happiness to my day. The special calling to bring others joy, is extraordinarily rewarding. As a Certified Nursing Assistant you provide in the basic care and safety to patients as well as assist them with activities of daily living. Daily duties are given to CNA’s by the supervising RN, often referred to as Charge Nurse.
My Intent to Be a Nurse Practitioner Coming from a third world country where there aren’t many opportunities for work and funding for education, proceding to nursing school was a grand opportunity. The privilege to attend a government subsidized school where top students in the region compete to get into the program that allowed only 60 students per year was indeed a blessing. As clinical rotations began, what was once considered a mere opportunity evolved into a true passion for caring as I truly love and enjoy nursing and helping people.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with my future. The constant pressure of dealing with teachers, parents and guidance counselors asking what I was planning on for a career was enough to seriously get me thinking. After hearing there were local CNA classes, I signed up for the first class I was able to take after turning the required age of sixteen. Numerous hours in my bedroom studying and memorizing vocabulary took up the majority of my free time after my high school classes. During the class,
