When you think of a job that you would like to do, what comes to your mind? The job that we are going to research and talk about today is a registered nurse. There are many vast opportunities for registered nurses. They are able to work in many different areas, and specialties. The job of a registered nurse is very rewarding. For a brief moment today, I want to take an overview of registered nurses.

One of the most important extra responsibilities that are required of nurses is teaching and education. When someone thinks of teaching the patient what needs to be done after a procedure, most think that a physician instructs them. Did you know that the nurse is the one to educate the patient on the procedure, and what they are to do after the procedure? Another extra responsibility that nurses perform is to advocate for patients beyond the healthcare environment. Meaning the nurse sometimes has to advocate on the patient's behalf in the court setting. Nurses are responsible for comforting patient’s loved ones after a terminal diagnosis or sadly death. When most people think of nurses, they automatically think of people that have a nursing degree. However, nurses have to pass a nationwide test called the NCLEX. This tests questions the knowledge of nurses, and makes sure that they are ready to practce at the bedside. The test varies among candidates. Some nurses get cutt of at 75 questions and others have to go for a few more. The test has 8 parts which include: Management of care (20%), Pharmagolical and Parenteral Therapies (15%), Physiological Adaptation (14%), Reduction of Risk Potential ( 12%), Safety and Infection Control (12%), Health Promotion and Maintenance (9%), Psychosocial Integrity (9%), Basic Care and Comfort (9%). When you add up all the percentages it comes out to equal an even 100 percent. This test is very important to determine the outcome of your nursing career.
