Outlining Your Profession When entering the health care field, an individual’s options are nearly endless. A person can be anything from a healthcare administrator to a doctor and everything in between. When exploring my options, I discovered that I can become a registered nurse. I decided to dig a little deeper and I came across the title of “nurse anesthetist.” I remember when I was first becoming interested in the healthcare field, I was toying with the idea of becoming a nurse anesthetist. The primary duties of a nurse anesthetist are to discuss medications that a patient may be taking to note if any counteraction would occur while under anesthesia, supervise patients when they awake from anesthesia, monitor vital signs, administer anesthesia and assist surgeons. Nurse anesthetists also handle patients’ airways via mechanical ventilation, respiratory therapy, and a great deal of other methods. In five years, I see myself moving onto my master’s degree, and by then I’ll be almost two years into my master’s. In addition to that, I see myself gaining experience by acquiring and starting an entry-level position in a hospital. One other vision that I have for myself in five years is to be living in the outskirts of San Francisco, more towards Fresno so that I can complete that fellowship when it comes time.
