Beethoven's Major Accomplishments

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770, in Bonn, Germany. He was raised in a family of musicians, and his father sang and taught him how to play instruments. When considering the greatest composer, it would have to be someone who had originality, natural talent, and someone who put their all into their music. In my estimation, although, he suffered from depression and was quite closed off, Beethoven is the greatest composer in European history because he developed his own style with his music, he had a natural gift, and he was very passionate.

The music he composed was Tragic, a style which had long gone out of fashion. The combination of tragedy and beauty made his pieces Romantic. “ One of Beethoven’s most significant contributions to the music of his time was to rediscover a true tragic style” (109). This illustrates how Beethoven developed his own way of composing that stood out against other composers of his era. In Beethoven’s Letters 1790-1826, he mentioned the fact that he never got married. He did, however, fall in love with two women whom he could not be with, and dedicated sonatas to both of them. This shows how he used music to express his feelings and in a way, relied on composing as an outlet for his emotions. In one of Beethoven’s darkest times, when his depression was at its peak, he wrote a sonata to express his pain. It was called “Sonata Pathetique”, and it was one of the only pieces he composed in his most depressed period. In the end, Beethoven was in love with music. Another way he showed this great passion of his life was by having to face the huge challenge of going deaf, but that didn’t stop him, he continued to compose. “By the time he conducted the premiere of his Ninth Symphony in 1824, he was totally deaf” (Farr). It is unbelieveable that he was able to overcome this obstacle in his career and continue doing what he loved. Clearly, Beethoven was extremely impassioned when it came to music and
