Between the bloody noses, well developed ten year old girls, and fifty year old men who fancy the young lifeguards, a lot goes into consideration when trying to decide what pool is right for one to lifeguard at. Although all lifeguard jobs may look the same from the outside, the differences are apparent to the employees. In the Joplin, Missouri area the two main lifeguard employers are Joplin Parks and Recreation and the YMCA. Both of these organizations are respected by the community, but they each have their shortcomings regarding pay, schedules, and the environment.

Surfmen are the embodiment of the Coast Guard’s 169-year lifesaving heritage. When the pressure drops and the air is thick with salt, an art form is passed down to a new generation on the heaving decks of Motor Lifeboats. The veteran Surfman regales eager greenhorns with tales of courage and tragedy. Despite the marvel and glory inherent in the title “Surfman”, it is a constant challenge to fill these historic billets, certify new Surfmen, and provide opportunities to meet career milestones. Initiatives implemented to create a sustainable pool of Surfman routinely fail, resulting in billet gaps, fatigue, and low job satisfaction.

Besides my love of community service, I have gained so much confidence in myself from my friends that I have met through Job 's Daughters. Ther are many opportunities to compete in public speaking, talent and pageant competitions. The first big competition I entered was the Junior Miss Oklahoma pageant when I was fifteen.
The boys and girls club has many great sports activities to join in to help get kids out of the street and become more active in their community. They are there for you when you need them the most and you make so many new positive friends through the activities they have. Camp voyageur was my favorite camp they made you feel wanted and you never felt left out the camp leaders helped you become a leader and made you feel more independent. Boys and girls club have shown me a lot in life and I want to further my education so that someday I can give back to them. With all of my reasons why I want to further my education the most important reason is so I can give back to my family and community one day.
Teaching the different levels and watching the children improve was a rewarding experience for me. Refereeing for soccer and being an umpire for little league baseball and softball taught me discipline and leadership with children and parents. At the CWC, I enjoy the opportunity to assist and communicate with people in the community striving for a healthier lifestyle. I enjoy volunteering in the community and working with people of all ages.

Currently, I am participating in several activities that I believe will be conducive to my goals of becoming a valuable asset to any organization that will have me. In the past few years I have been surrounding myself with activities, academic and otherwise, that I believe to be at least in some way beneficial to my goals in future. My participation in National Honor Society, Student Government, Model Debate, History Bowl, and Tennis each reflect a different aspect of myself that I wish to forge into one cohesive individual. National Honor Society is representative of service and character, Student Government of leadership, Model Debate is for debate and compromise, History Bowl for scholarship, and finally Tennis for camaraderie and teamwork.
These clubs have a primary focus on community service. As of right now, I have earned a total of 175+ community service hours. I have knitted sweaters for the homeless, volunteered at camps for inner city kids, and traveled to Panama to build schools and provide medical services for those in need. I have an interest in missions and plan to take part in many more. On top of these activities, I also work part time at a dental office.
As a child, I was always extremely passionate about dance as a mode of expression for myself. However, my family’s financial situation never permitted me to take proper classes, and for a while I felt that a dream within myself had been crushed. When high school rolled around, I searched for an activity that would satisfy my dance needs and stumbled upon the extracurricular activity Color Guard, which consisted of flag, rifle, and sabre spinning. I grew excited at the idea of joining an activity in my high school, but what really drew me in was the dance aspect. I would finally be able to live out my dream without bound…or so I thought.
My job would very year to year but I mostly helped with setting up events and making sure the participants got to the right event. Sometimes I would even get to participate in the event like the wheel chair relay race. I love working with this organization because I love watching the participates get excited about doing their events. The service hours I completed were coaching and leading lacrosse clinics and practices for girls ages six to seventeen.
