Making Ice Cream Responsible
Many people don’t expect to have their ice cream to be so political, but Ben and Jerry’s has a mission to use their ice cream as a way to retaliate against issues all around the globe. From free ice cream in their scoop shops to large scale campaigns they use their notable brand to appeal to various types of people in order to spread their ideas. Ben and Jerry’s wish is for the world to be better for everyone and not just for the privileged. Some of their goals include better food policies, equality, peace, and a healthier environment, and they advocate them not to the people of the United States, but to people around the globe. As they ran their mile laps the slowest, they together built a bond that would last a lifetime. (Greenfield). They started their ice cream company together in 1977. They learned how to make their product at a course during their time at Penn State, and then they opened their first shop in Vermont. From there, Ben and Jerry’s grew and grew to the company that it is today. This includes all types of people from around the world have a chance at economic sustainability. The company has joined in helping developing countries and small farmers by becoming a part of a crusade called Fairtrade. Instead of getting their products made by big corporations instead they get them from various places from smaller farmers. Their products tend to be really vital for their ice cream so the farmers they partner with get a lot of money because they need to make a lot for the company. Some goods include sugar from Belize, cocoa from the Ivory Coast and Ghana, vanilla from Madagascar and Uganda, coffee from Mexico, and bananas from El Guabo. By being a part of Faritrade, Ben and Jerry's has improved the lives of many across the world. In these countries their effort ends up helping not only the farmers lives, but the locals lives. In Ghana, Mexico, and El Guabo their production was able to help fund some children's education. In Mexico, Madagascar and the Ivory Coast their efforts have contributed to better medical facilities. For the farmers themselves in El Guabo, Ben and Jerry's helped provide healthcare for all who worked in the production process; and all the farmers apart of this movement have become successful (Fairtrade).
