There are many controversies and theories for explanations regarding school shootings. School shootings have been introduced into American society as almost a common trait. No other country in the world has dealt with this conflict as consistently. They are a trait that was brought about in the mid 1990’s and have escalated to become a common event among society. Statistically speaking there is a school shooting in the United States of America on average once a week.
Gun control has been a controversial issue for years and numerous solutions have been proposed and enacted. The debate sparked after tragic civilian attacks, like school shootings. An example, is the tragedy in 1999 at Columbine High School. Two teens attacked the school, killing 13 people and wounding more than 20 others before killing themselves. Following this attack, numerous solutions have been argued and purposed.
In another view, many of those who are on the board of having guns have limited reasoning. Winkler even states “On the Other hand , gun advocates are too quick to assume that laws allowing guns on campus will discourage mass murderers.” Even in Arizona, which was an example in the article, it had passed a liberal carrying law, and with that, there was still a shooting of a man hurting a representative and killing six other people along with it. This remark goes back to the last paragraph and how it could make a setting bitter and uncomfortable instead of having people feel safer because they would be able to “fight back”. Also in a shooting that could happen at a school people could have a gun on them and still would not be able to protect himself, but also can shoot a bystander because they could have thought it was the shooter.
In a nation of pioneers and settlers, where we capitalize upon a bear wielding a firearm to represent “our right to bear arms” there has come to be quite a bit of bloodshed because of that right. Fear has been interwoven into the school system, a kind of fear that even the greatest school safety measures cannot prevent. Such instances being the Columbine, Newtown, and the more recent Parkland school shooting. It cannot be controlled who does the killing, but what can be isolated is the weapon those chose as their aid in the slaughtering. So many lives are lost in these devastations a step towards preventing more from being lost is increasing gun control.
Gene Hoffman, the Chairman of the Calguns Foundation, a nonprofit that seeks to protect the rights of individuals to own, and lawfully use firearms in California, seems to disagree with arguing against guns in school. In an article by U.S. News, called “Teachers Should Be Allowed to Carry Guns”, Hoffman Says that, “It is our right to carry guns, and that the absence of them is not going away anytime soon, so we might as well arm good guys to protect us from the bad guys. With over 300,000,000 guns out there, so if someone wants to get their hands on a gun, making stronger laws won’t prevent them from wanting to do harm” (3). Hoffman makes some good points because guns are not going to go away anytime soon, and we need to figure out how were going to deal with them. Although, bringing more guns into public places, especially schools, is certainly not the best way to handle this issue.
Gun Control Debate Jake Novak, in an article for CNBC titled, “Gun control isn’t the answer. We already know how to stop the violence,” gives his opinion regarding the controversial issue of gun control. Novak argues that gun control is not the answer to rising gun violence but that proper enforcement of the law would go a long way in reducing the cases of gun violence in America. He states, “We actually solved the issue of rising gun violence in America in the mid-1990’s and again in the early 2000’s by doing something radical. We enforced the law” (Novak 28).
The gun debate issue is a controversial topic in the United States with the last school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Many people do not know what an effective legislative response to something like this, and that is where the debate comes in. Some offer bans on certain weapons and even an all out gun ban, while others offer stricter background checks or armed guards on campus. However, no matter what belief a person has, right now the Second Amendment is a right of all United States Citizens and it is a important component for the protection of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It does not take long for a debate to arise after a school shooting to argue which side is to blame. However, the debate has done nothing but made it worse for the trend of school shootings as it typically results in nothing. With two opposing sides, they barely consider any reasonable solutions since they are more focused on worrying if the gun or the shooter is to blame for the death of hundreds of people. In an article written by the Gallups’ Lida Saad concluded, “According to two recent Gallup polls, from 2011 and 2013, more people believe that mass shootings result from a failure of the mental-health system than from easy access to guns.” Gun advocates are in favor of this reasoning because they believe that the system is failing to identify mental health patients in regards to gun violence.
The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.
School safety is a major issue right now. Some say that Schools need to have better safety measures, some say the violence that has occurred in schools would wide is due that mental health illnesses and some say it is because of gun control. These vicious acts would have never happened if there wasn’t a gun involved. Guns are dangerously powerful weapons, of mass destruction that take lives. Lives are not something you can get back, once your dead your dead
The Second Amendment of The United States Constitution states that "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. " The topic of the editorial, "Let The Teachers Teach" by The New York Times Editorial Board, is about gun control and why it is important that guns are out of schools. A few weeks ago there was another school shooting in the United States, twelve school shootings to be exact in just nine weeks. In Parkland, Florida a 19-year old man walked into a school with an AR-15 and shot and killed 17 students. The editorial states that in response President Trump is suggesting that we should arm 20% of the teachers in primary and secondary schools which would equal around 700,000 teachers in the United States
Guns have no role in our country schools. Schools and colleges are places of education. Students should be free to learn in an environment away from every day violence. The catastrophes that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School, and Virginia Tech. confirm the penetrating conclusion guns have in our nation’s schools. Violence on campus has Students, Parent, and University Staff all concerned and looking for preventative measures.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
“Just in 2018 there has been 18 school shootings, on average per week” (snopes:How many school shootings have taken place so far in 2018). The incidents that have occurred have been a big impact in people 's lives. Yet no one with power has spoken about the problems regarding the recent shooting. See, there are two main sides of gun control, the side that agrees and the side that doesn’t. People who agree believe that no one should be able to own a gun, or that there should simply be stricter gun control laws.
