After the revelation of the masquerade, Captain Delano attempts to console Cereno by evoking imagery of hope, or light: “see, yon bright sun has forgotten it all, and the blue sea, and the blue sky; these have turned over new leaves” (Melville 106). After the deposition, Delano brings back light and brightness to Cereno, whose distrust supersedes any of nature’s reassurance. Delano is embodying notions of truth and illumination and nature itself is shining on him, therefore, all doubt is cast aside. However, this is not true for Cereno who carries a shadow of doubt with him due to his embedded experience of an elaborate charade carried on by what he would see as nature’s dark side, African slaves. This is portrayed when he associates his “shadow” with “The negro” (107).
An episode from the sea" in the Harper Magazine. The story depicted is loosely-based on Conrad’s experience as a marine offier in the British merchant marine and tells the story of a young and isnecure captain, who is not sure he’ll be able to rule over his men, having joined the ship only a fortnight before. Herman Melville’s story Benito Cereno creates controversial arguments and moral questions. First published in 1855, the story tells of an American captain, Amasa Delano, attempting to assist an apparently broken-down ship called the San Dominick. Initially, the ship’s leader, the namesake of the story, appears as this weak leader that cannot control the conflict among the slaves and sailors. As Delano further discovers the ship and doubts Cereno’s motives, the readers are almost brought to believe that Cereno tricked Delano into a piracy stunt. However, the story takes quite a twist when Delano attempts to return to his own ship and Cereno launches himself overboard while his “loyal slave” Babo foes after him.

Herman Melville can be considered one of the most important writers of the American Romance. His masterpiece, Moby Dick, tells the reader the story of Ishmael, an isolated sailor whose only escape is the sea, his one and only consolation. Ishmael joins the Pequod, a whaling ship captained by Ahab, an obscure and sick old sea wolf obsessed with the haunting of Moby Dick, a white sperm whale which ripped his leg out, leaving in his mind a deep revenge desire. In this paper I illustrate the description of the captain Ahab’s inhumanity and cruelty, as well as Ishmael’s desire of being in contact with the sea, seen as a way of escaping from the world he lives in. Captain Ahab’s inhumanity is described along the story, letting the reader discover Ahab’s reasons of his cruelty.

However, injustices among the crew, such as cutting rations, after drifting off-course in a storm agitate Mr. Christian. Upon reaching their first destination, Tahiti, the unease diminishes and the crew indulges themselves in Tahitian life, an extremely appealing environment after living on the ship for the past few months.
