Dictator, Benito Mussolini
Roald Dahl's memoir, Going Solo, is of his work in East Africa and his service in the RAF, which covers much of the buildup to World War II. In the book there is mention made of Benito Mussolini. Dictator Mussolini plays a large role in the memoir as one of the main causes of the war. Dahl says that "Hitler and Mussolini are 2 lizards which live in our sitting room. " (p.39). In fact, one of the central reasons this quote is significant is because it ties with numerous connections to the war, specifically WWII.

By the late 1930s Germany and Italy had become military allies – however their priorities were still with their own national interests, rather than supporting the interests or ambitions of another country, " states alphahistory.com. The textual evidence proves how Hitler could have had an impact on Mussolini when it came to ruling.
In the end, Benito ended up turning from a prime minister to a dictator. "He became the 27th Prime Minister of Italy in 1922 and became dictator in less than five years; " as he slowly progressed he made a pathway toward being a dictator. Another hint at this was, "Many are not aware that, as a child Benito was a bully in school. He stabbed a fellow student in the hand with a knife." This is like a mini foreshadow of his future. Mussolini wasn’t the most typical person as a child.
In conclusion, Benito Mussolini wasn't mentioned in the book to much, but he did play a big role during WWII. Benito was a well-known fascist who allowed uncanny acts slide by. Benito and Hitler were a dangerous duo; in the end, Hitler ended up having a huge impact on Mussolini. Benito went from Prime minister to fascist dictator in less than 5 years.
