In the movies Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets along with the books Beowulf and Grendel there are many universal archetypes that reveal a deeper meaning within each of the works that help readers and viewers understand the true purpose of that work. The archetypes including the Magic Weapon, Lightness vs. Darkness, and The Hero all come together and bring out all of the universal ideas and themes that bring out the true meaning and purpose in these works that people crave. The Magic Weapon would represent the hero or protagonist being able to use his or her given power or ability to defeat those who are evil. In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope there are many characters that have a weapon or power that allows them to defeat the overall villain, Dark Vader, who poses a threat to the rebellion. Obi-Wan Kenobi possesses the power of the force and eventually teaches Luke Skywalker the ways of the force and how he can use it to help defeat Dark Vader and his army. In Beowulf the great knight known as Beowulf must complete the difficult task of defeating the monster Grendel and the way he does this is by using powerful sword and armor that give him the strength greater than any other man to defeat the evil figures who pose a threat. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Harry was being attacked by the snake that Voldemort that he had sent to kill Harry so Harry had to use the Godric Gryffindor’s sword to defeat the snake and save his own life and those around him. Darkness is a major archetype that represents good and evil and even the main characters whether they are a hero or villain. In Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope there are two sides that represent the Lightness and the Darkness which are the Rebellion who is led by Luke Skywalker and the Empire who is run by Dark Vader. In this particular movie The Empire is trying to spread darkness and destroy the rebellion, however, it is up to Luke Skywalker to fight back and defeat the Empire to restore lightness. In the short story of Grendel, the monster known as Grendel lives beneath the earth in an underwater lair which would represent the darkness and there is a side unknown to him and that is the normal world which represents the lightness. In the short story of Beowulf darkness is spread across the land by the evil creature known as Grendel and he must be stopped the one and only Beowulf who will use his powers to restore lightness to the land ruled by King Hrothgar. The archetype of Lightness vs. Darkness reveals the true characteristics that separate the light and the dark and how that with these two compared against each other it gives a sense of suspense as to what is going to happen
