A leader is a person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. Being a leader is a hard task, in the book The Odyssey and in the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou, both Odysseus, and Everett have chosen to be the leader and lead their men toward the “treasure”. While both men are leaders, I think that Odysseus was the better leader compared to Everett.
What exactly is a good leader and how should they be? In the readings, by Christine de Pizan The Treasure of the City of Ladies and another by Niccolo Machiavelli The Prince. They both talk about how a prince and a princess should act upon their people. For Pizan she talks about how a princess should be kind hearted and accepting towards her people. She should act like this sho that they will help her whenever she is need.
Leadership is a difficult quality to obtain. There are many characteristics that person needs to have in order to be considered a leader. Most important characteristics to have while in charge are intelligence, common sense, cautiousness, and bravery. Two leaders that are well-known in history are Maria Theresa of Austria and Odysseus, the main character in Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. This epic poem has a main focus of leadership and it is a great piece of text to get the reader to ask questions and try to find out the characteristics that make a good leader.
As a leader you have to be humble and giving for people to like and follow you. In “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” before the green knight came he was sharing a meal with all of his army. King Arthur was not up in his castle he was down on the ground with the fellow people. He treats them equal and that is how to be a good leader. In the Story Beowulf Hrothgar shared his money and riches and did not keep them to himself.
Both Odysseus from The Odyssey and Dally from The Outsiders demonstrate outstanding leadership. In particular, Odysseus helped his crew escape from the Cyclops: Polyphemus by strongly convincing them to follow his lead and plan. ‘’Have courage. A solution will present itself. Haven't I gotten us out of tougher scrapes than this one?’’
Martin Luther King Jr. a famous civil rights leader who pushed for the equality of races, has said that “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. The importance of leadership from this is that a good leader is not determined by when he is comfortable, but in the decisions he makes when everybody is relying on him. An effective leader doesn’t have to be a perfect person, he just has to make his people trust him and do whatever he can in his power to help his followers. A good leader cares about his followers , makes decisions that are to the benefit of his followers, and is trusted by his followers. Odysseus is a famous literary leader who is the main character of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey.
When thinking about stories we think about adventures in other worlds or tales that teach a lesson in the end, just as you originally thought, The Odyssey writer Homer, an ancient Greek poet, wrote the adventures of the legendary Odysseus who was a courageous hero that faced any challenge in front of him. One thing Homer believes but not directly is that Odysseus is a great example of a true leader. Odysseus proved he was a good leader in many occasions most importantly him always taking his responsibilities as a leader seriously, him and his son, Telemachus, executing the ones who proved they don’t belong in the palace, and finally Odysseus helping his men escape the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus. One reason Odysseus shows great leadership is when he’s handed a task or a gift from a god or ruler and he gives it great thought and care.
My major thesis was saying how Beowulf is a true leader from what he has done and the courage he has had when it came down to protect the people cares about and his kingdom. In conclusion a true Leader or hero whatever you prefer calling it is someone who has a lot of dignity and nobility to do what is right. One last thing you should be if you want to be a leader is being Self Assured at all
The effects of leadership throughout our timeline in this world have had a major toll on how we shape our lives today. We have many types of leadership like democracy, theocracy, and many more. We see these types of leadership in the poem Beowulf translated by Seamus Heaney. In the epic the main kings are Hrothgar who is a generous and a natural leader of the Danes, and Beowulf who is known as a noble and loyal king of the Geats. Both of these kings went through many events that had many different impacts on them and they succeeded.
Wherever human beings are accumulated together in large numbers, they need leadership. Even a school needs a principle to mentor and escalate the school’s rank. Armies need generals to lead them to a courageous victory. Civilians need governments, captains of industry and intellectual leaders of thought as well. However, There are characteristics common to most great leaders that can be picked out.
An epic hero is an individual who must evoke a sense of heroism through legendary and inspiring deeds (Merriam-Webster). These heroes of tragedy have the ability to determine their own fortune due to the amount of admired characteristics they possess. However, the ideals of an epic hero are constantly fluctuating due to the ever changing ideals of society. Although the characteristics of an epic hero are under constant modification, Beowulf is still an effective modern-day hero due to his acts of courage, compassion, and dedication in relation to his people. Courage can be defined as any individual possessing moral or mental strength in the face of physical pain or indescribable hardship (Personalitytutor).
"Hear me! We've heard of Danish heroes, ancient kings and the glory they cut for themselves, swinging mighty swords." These verses were words sung over and over, by singing poets all over ancient Europe. They were sung in the presence of kings and warriors. They are the beginning lines of the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf, an ancient tale of monsters, dragons, kings, warriors, battles, life, death, and the virtues of a hero.
He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent" (McCarther 2015). A leader should lead from the front and also have the ability to think quickly on their feet and take care of their Soldiers. Have faith and trust that the leadership is doing their best to keep everything in
What makes a leader? I believe a leader to be intelligent ,tough, and has the determination to achieve a goal. Having certain skills will have an impact on you being a trustable leader. Being selfless and caring are also characteristics. Malcolm X his birth name Malcolm Little is a fine a example of a leader and has most of these leadership qualities.
One of the most important characteristics of a good leader is that they must be actually prepared to lead under any circumstance. This sounds like something that should go without saying, but it is surprising just how many people who are in a leadership role are not prepared to take an active role in leading their team. A good leader does not sit back and observe what is going
