To begin the novel, George Orwell expresses his main character's distaste of the people around him. It is narrated that, “Winston’s hatred was not turned against Goldstein at all, but, on the contrary, against Big Brother, the Party, and the Thought Police” (Orwell 15). Orwell's choice to write about Winston's disdain for the party foreshadows Winston's character because of how his hatred was turned against the Party, Big Brother, and the Thought Police.
