The Effect of Exercise on the Cell Continuity of Betta Splendens Keerthana Arjuna Joe Gibson George Washington High School Abstract The objective of ted this experiment was to observe how exercise would affect the cell continuity of betta splendens’ muscle cells. To conduct this experiment, three fish were put under three different amounts of exercise for fourteen days. After fourteen days, the fish were euthanized and tissue samples were obtained. The tissue samples were stained with acid fuchsin. After staining protocol, the samples were viewed through a microscope, using the highest magnification possible. The Chi^2 test rejected to fail the null hypothesis, meaning a change had …show more content…

The experiment was designed to alter the amount of exercise a betta splenden was given to observe any changes in mitochondrial content. By conducting this experiment, tissue samples were obtained and observed closely for mitochondrial content. Upon observation, mitochondria were not visible and the closest magnification only provided for a clear image of the tissue cells. The theory was modified to observe the effect of exercise on the cell continuity of betta splendens. A Likert’s scale would be used to quantify the results. The Likert’s scale would work so that in order to score a 1, the cell must have a 90% or above cell continuity. In order to score a 5, the cell must have 10% or less cell …show more content…

Scientific concepts strengthened through the conduction of this experiment were the concept of mitochondria and exercise, mitochondria’s function and structure in the cell, and how mitochondria use fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to power the cell and to power the body of an organism. Analyzing the data in this experiment resulted in a better knowledge of the concept of Chi^2 and how to calculate Chi^2, what a Likert’s scale is and how to create such a scale, and how to quantitatively record data from an experiment when there aren't straightforward
