The protagonist of the book Between Shades of Gray, Lina, changed in many different ways by the time that the book was finished. She was convinced that she was worth less than an animal, she was forced by the Secret Soviets to work, and was given very little food, she found out the reason why she was forced into these work camps. These three things impacted Lina and changed her. She would never be the same thanks to these daunting moments in her life. Growing up, Lina lived a privileged life. She went to school, lived in a huge house with her whole family, and her father brought in a considerable amount of money to the family by working at the university he taught at. Lina’s life seemed to be charted for success; she was an amazing artist with talent greater than many that were older than her. She was a young girl with a lot of value, and she knew it. Her mother and father cherished her and her younger brother. They surrounded them with love that let them know that they were special. All of that changed when, with barley any warning, Lina and her families were swept forcefully out of their house onto uncomfortable trucks where Lina was separated from her father.
