Recommended Action
Under Bike Master Plan, New York City should continue to move forward in its efforts to encourage cycling as an alternative form of transportation by increasing the number of bike racks and lockers available in the city. This action seeks to specifically make cycling easier and more desirable to both local residents and visitors.

Issues

Minimalistic designs which maximize the number of bikes being securely stored in the smallest amount of space are exactly what this city requires. Finding and expanding creative ways to house bikes all over the city will encourage the public to bike to their destination because now they have a place to park. However, there could also be unintended consequences to adding new bike racks around the city. With any addition to the city, there are always possibilities of negative impacts such as the accumulation of trash, the interruption in pedestrian traffic, and the unintended decline in business for various store owners. Owning a bike costs more money up front, however, there is little maintenance cost required from that point forward. However, shared bikes do have the benefit of not needing to be personally stored, whether at home, work, or the store. The shared bike program is still relatively new, so despite any software and funding issues that have come up, it still has the potential to radically increase the number of cyclists throughout the city. Primarily, focusing on increasing the number of shared bike stations and working out issues with the software would dramatically help the benefits outweigh the
