The Hobbit is an inspirational children’s novel because it teaches children that anyone can accomplish great things and that appearance does not matter when comes to strength. This is brought up at the beginning of the story as Bilbo Baggins is initially portrayed as an immature childlike character who is neither brave, nor capable enough for such a mission. Although lacking in these qualities Bilbo eventually develops them throughout his quest and we see his true potential for the first time. Curry states “At the outset, Gandalf assures the dwarves that there is more to Bilbo than meets the eye” (Curry 53).
