The Hobbit is all about people leading, the forces of good allying, and the forces of evil trying to stop them achieving their goals. The main characters on the good side all have some element of leadership.
Bilbo isn’t the first person you would think of to be a leader. He is a polite, homely hobbit who minds his own business and thinks he will never have an adventure. Little does he know he has the makings of a leader and someone who will go on many adventures See (Page. 8)So one day when a band of dwarves stumble onto his doorstep he does what any respectable hobbit would do and asks if they would like tea. The dwarves, being dwarves, gladly accept. It is only after they have emptied his pantry that they tell him of the dark and perilous journey that awaits them on their way to the lonely mountain. They ask Bilbo if he’d be their burglar, Bilbo is completely overwhelmed with it all and faints. Bilbo has no right to be a leader but he has a way with people that makes them happy to follow his lead without question. Hobbits are not affected by dragon sickness as much as dwarves and men. Born to rule, Thorin has all of the natural abilities to lead and to deal with people See (Page.212). Thorin has the type of personality which when his mind is set on something it cannot be changed See (Page. 20). At the end of their adventure Thorin falls under the power of dragon-sickness which makes Thorin selfish and greedy. This makes Thorin’s leadership unsteady and tenuous.
