There are more than 6500 language around the world. We cannot control or decide where we are going to be born or we cannot decide our mother language. But we can choose which language we are going to use as our second language. Bilingualism can be defined as having some ability to use two or even more languages. The bilingual programs have goals vary widely. Some bilingual programs target to develop proficiency in two languages. However at the beginning of twenty first century, monolingual is not enough for social, economic and educational development. Being of bilingual has practical benefits in globalize world and it is not limited to having conversations and communicate with more people around. In 1922 the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein said, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” When we can speak more than one language, we learn to see a bigger world. Many language researchers agree with this. Speaking multiple languages help to communicate with other people around us and bilingualism give distinct benefits to the developing brain and more flexible thinking than monolingual. Child is raised bilingually from birth or second language is introduced before the first language is well established. Other one is second language is introduced after the first language is well established. But it would not be better to start teaching the second language after children have a good start on the first. Especially in the bilingual home situation introducing the second language later is just about guaranteed to make them think it’s less important and not worth the effort.
