American society is judgemental. A person who has recently been judged heavily by society is Billie Eilish. Her music has been looked down upon since the release of her first song Ocean Eyes. Why? That is a question that cannot be answered considering her music is a product of society’s culture and reflects society as a whole. Complaints of Bilie’s music include that she only whispers, every song is depressing and she uses too much autotune. Unfortunately, these complaints come from people who have only heard a few songs. For example, in Billie’s song listen before i go, she wrecks her audience by singing “taste me, the salty tears on my cheek that’s what a year-long headache does to you”. By Billie releasing a song with lyrics that are so raw and authentic she can reach many with the same struggles as her, in this case, that struggle being depression. In recent years, the number of people with depression has drastically increased. Many in society deal with depression and other mental illnesses, so the fact that Billie has music showing is a prime example of how her art reflects society as a whole. In another one of Billie’s songs, idontwannabeyouanymore, she sings “if teardrops could be bottled, there’d be swimming pools filled by models”. This line reflects the fact that people who are looked at to have a great life tend to be the ones with depression. Billie is able to perfectly represent so many in society that feel that they are not understood for the sole reason that they have a good life as well as a mental illness. The fact that so many people relate to this lyric is heartbreaking, but unfortunately, that is where society is at this time. In addition to those songs, everything i wanted, is also a huge one that deals with mental health. The song is about a dream that Billie had where she committed suicide and it made her happy because at the time she was in a pretty dark place. With that being said, the song’s chorus is what her brother, Finneas, says to her because he cares about her and doesn’t want mental illness to take over his sister. The most impactful line goes “if I could change the way that you see yourself, you wouldn’t wonder why you hear they don't deserve you”. This song shows a different side of mental health.
