Billy Collins wrote a poem with the title is “Introduction to Poetry.” This is a free verse poem that includes sixteen lines and seven stanzas. There is no rhyme scheme. The meter is unusual. As in most daily conversation, the voice lowers then rises as stresses change. The metaphors such as hive, mouse, and simile are present, as is personification: to torture a confession out of it. These all bring energy, texture, and imagery into the poem, which makes the poem more interesting read. Especially, this poem has an educational tone. The speaker stood before the reader like a teacher. The speaker uses the imperative words to give a clue such as I ask, I say, I want so, the reader may recognize and understand the message of the poem.
