It’s undeniable Billy Mitchell is one of the most famous generals in the world. Although he was not labeled “father of military flight”, he is considered “father of the United States Air Force”. Billy Mitchell was born December 29th 1879 in Nice, France. Billy was the oldest of his 9 other siblings. Billy grew up in Wisconsin and eventually enlisted in the Army at the age of 18, in the year 1898. In 1913, Mitchell was promoted to a captain, and he became the youngest officer on the general staff. He was only 34 years old. He transferred to Virginia to become a commander of the Army Aviation in the year 1916. Mitchell was assigned to the American Expenditionary Forces, and was one of the first Americans on the scene.
